Military Conflict Escalates

On Wednesday, oil prices surged, with Brent crude reaching two-month highs while bitcoin retreated to $79,000 following new reports of U.S. strikes on Iranian tankers and retaliatory strikes by Iranian forces. Market data show Brent crude breached $100 per barrel for the first time since July 2, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) surpassed $95 per barrel at a time of high fuel demand in the U.S. Since Aug. 30, Brent cruse oil has now gone up by over 10%.

According to U.S. Central Command, American forces destroyed five Iranian crude oil carriers Sept. 8 after the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps targeted a U.S. Navy warship with ballistic missiles. The U.S. military said it also destroyed three Iranian crude oil carriers three days earlier following IRGC attempts to target its warships.

Immediately following U.S. strikes, reports from the Middle East suggested three oil tankers were hit by suspected Iranian drones near Dubai, Kuwait and Qatar. The latest surge in oil prices sent European stock indices tumbling, with the DAX index down by more than 400 points, or 1.62%.

Before the latest escalation, bitcoin had stabilized, recovering from Tuesday’s low of $77,603 to eye the $80,000 threshold. But after touching a session high of $79,742, the cryptocurrency slipped back below $78,800 as fresh clashes rattled market sentiment. As of 10:24 a.m. EST, bitcoin had rebounded to trade above $79,300.

Meanwhile, the surge in oil prices saw the yield on the 2-year U.S. Treasury note rise 2 basis points to 4.423%. Some analysts warn that surging oil prices complicate efforts to tame inflation. Marc Ostwald, chief economist and global strategist at ADM Investor Services in London, warned that higher energy prices increase headwinds to growth.

“Rates and FX markets are facing an ever more complex environment, with the risks of high energy prices spilling over more broadly in inflation terms, but in turn also increasing the risks of growing headwinds to growth, and demand destruction,” Ostwald said.

However, with diplomatic channels effectively frozen, the six-month-old conflict shows little sign of abating. Tehran’s warning of a harsher retaliation to future Western actions threatens more than just an immediate supply shock to global oil markets; it risks triggering a broader regional destabilization. For bitcoin, this heightened geopolitical volatility threatens to stifle risk-on appetite, severely capping its near-term upside potential.
