Anthropic says it will commit 5% of its shares to a new public benefit fund, with additional equity tied to future value growth, subject to approval.
Anthropic said on Sunday that it will commit a portion of its shares to a new Anthropic Public Benefit Fund, describing the structure as one that would increase the stake as the company grows. The announcement matters because it frames a larger share of the company’s equity as dedicated to public benefit rather than traditional ownership or compensation use.
What Anthropic said
In its Oct. 18, 2026 statement, Anthropic said that, subject to stockholder approval, 5% of its shares will be committed immediately, with an additional 2% added at the board’s discretion for every 50% increase in company value above a set baseline. The company said the fund will be established as a wholly owned LLC, rather than a 501(c)(3) or similar charity, to allow flexibility between different forms of giving.
Anthropic said the fund could support large donations to traditional nonprofits or direct distributions to specific populations. As one example, the company pointed to labor-market impacts from AI, saying it has already committed $200 million to study and address that issue but that faster AI progress may require broader approaches.
Governance and context
The company said none of the Anthropic equity held by the LLC will be used for lobbying or political giving, in the U.S. or abroad. It also said the structure builds on earlier commitments from its co-founders and employees, including a pledge by the co-founders to donate 80% of their equity holdings and an employee equity donation match program that Anthropic said covers approximately half of its workforce.
Anthropic said that, when combined with the new commitment, roughly 20% of Anthropic shares will be dedicated to the public good, plus any additional percentage that may be added if the company reaches specific valuation milestones. The company said it will provide more details on the fund’s structure, governance and valuation milestones in the coming months, alongside a public benefit report on progress against its mission.
Background material supplied with the announcement notes that Anthropic is a Delaware public benefit corporation and distinguishes the company’s Long-Term Benefit Trust, which holds exclusive Class T shares for governance oversight, from the newly announced fund. That background also notes that Anthropic’s company page, as reviewed on Oct. 18, 2026, lists Neil Buddy Shah, Richard Fontaine and Ben Bernanke as trustees.
Recent related company updates included an agenda for the Economic Futures Research Fund on July 22, 2026, and the appointment of Ben Bernanke to Anthropic’s Long-Term Benefit Trust on July 9, 2026.
